Tony has been actively exploring the instrument since 1966. He cut his teeth on progressive rock and blues. However, he became interested in Latin and jazz in the 70’s. During his years in college he enjoyed jamming to the Latin rhythms he loved in obscure South Phoenix clubs.
During this time, Tony had the opportunity spend a week in training under the renowned Howard Roberts. Besides being one of the world’s great jazz guitarists, he was also renowned as an excellent teacher and mentor. Tony spent 10 hours a day for 7 days with Roberts in an intimate group.
“He taught me a great deal about improvisation when I was young. I owe him a lot.”
In the 80s, Tony formed the groups Touchstone and Release in the Phoenix area to penetrate the predominantly rock/country/western market with a jazz/Latin/rock fusion of music palatable to a wide audience. In 1986, he moved to the Northwest and continued contemporary jazz pursuits forming bands Tropical Ice and Illegal Jazz.
“I have performed many Seattle Eastside venues such as: The Kirkland Roaster, The Portofino, The 3rd Floor Fish Cafe, Beck’s Restaurant, Smoky Joe’s Tavern .....“
